Telephone scams from “HMRC”

Telephone scams – NOT from HMRC

A telephone scam is being used again as we come up to a self-assessment payment deadline.

Be extra careful if you receive a call from a “debt collection agency” or “solicitors”, saying they are calling on behalf of HMRC and threatening severe action if you didn’t pay immediately over the phone.  Of course you should never do this – if in any doubt call back one of the genuine numbers on HMRC’s website.

We have become aware of some very cleverly designed emails that are going around at the moment.  They purport to come from HMRC.  Typically these will tell you that you are due a refund or that there has been a filing error.  They then proceed to try and suck you in to giving the spammers more information.

The phone calls and emails sound and look very real – but the callers are not from HMRC and email addresses are covers and not genuine.  So take great care.

If you get something you are not sure about, have a look at HMRC’s own advice or speak to us first.  If we haven’t already told you that you have a tax bill coming up, then be warned.  If you are not sure do NOT click any links in the emails sent to you or divulge ANY information.  HMRC’s website also provides a list of genuine numbers to call back.
